Hip-Hop, Review | Grubeats’ Top 12 of ’12

Posted by on January 14, 2013

Grubeats; fashionably tardy as always.  I can’t promise I’ve saved the best for last, but hopefully this eclectic mix of tracks tickle’s at least party of your fancy.  I’d enjoy hearing from you in the comments section if you have opinions on any of these songs!

12.) Skizzy Mars – Sirens

This young star didn’t sound my radar until late spring of ’12.  I had heard the name and few scattered verses, but overlooked the true talent Skizzy Mars was bringing to the table until I first heard “Sirens”.  With sounds similar to a young Cudi, Skizzy himself only recently graduated high school and has only begun to lie the brick and mortar for long, prosperous career.

11.) Skrillex & Damian Marley – Make It Bun Dem

As you probably know, I’m not a die heard EDM head like many writers and followers of this site.  No kandi for this kid.  I do however, enjoy just about anything Skrillex lays his hands on.  Couple the addictive production with Damian Marley’s rasta raps and you have pure gold.  If and when hip-hop and EDM cross paths, this is the type of execution I expect. Hip-Hop, Videos | King Mez – Monte Carlo [Music Video]

Posted by on December 13, 2012

[do action=”youtube” videoid=”KpokaYbliZM”/]

King Mez stormed my system with the release of My Everlasting Zeal back in the spring.  Since, he has expedited his way atop my all star list of up-and-comers, listening to the mixtape over and over and enjoying it more and more each time through.  “Monte Carlo” is a clear favorite off the project, laced with designer rhymes and delivered with an addictive drum kick from producer Commissioner Gordon and raw scratches from DJ Flash.  This North Carolina emcee is nothing short of extraordinary and if you haven’t yet grabbed the free DL of My Everlasting Zeal, I suggest doing so now.

Hip-Hop | King Mez – The Allure ft. Drey Skonie (Prod. By J. Cole)

Posted by on April 11, 2012

Sifting through today’s submissions, I caught eye of this track from King Mez, “The Allure”, highlighted by the fact it was produced by J. Cole.  Sure the name associated drew my initial attention, but the beat alone won’t sell itself, even if it is from a Grammy nominated Rapper/Producer.  With that being said, I was thoroughly impressed by King Mez’s delivery.  A breath of Fresh air Heir (cue the hashtag to support the movement #FreshHeir).  Evidently an intelligent artist, Mez provides thought provoking rhymes leaving me wanting more.  An alluring introductory.

Mez’s association with Cole is still uncertain at this point, but looking ahead to see additional production off his upcoming album, My Everlasting Zeal, will feature that of Commissioner Gordon, Soundtrakk (Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick Push” and “Superstar”), Omen (Dreamville), 1120, and Prolyfic, it appears Mez has aced the art of networking.  In addition, he appears to be from Raleigh, NC, a mere hour and five minute drive from Jermaine’s hometown of Fayetteville (yes, I Googled it).
