Featured, Interviews | FNT Catches up With Ferry Corsten at Electric Zoo 2013

Posted by on September 10, 2013

Ferry Corsten @ Electric Zoo 2013

The FNT squad caught up with perennial trance king Ferry Corsten on Friday before his Electric Zoo set — and as always, Ferry had lots of excellent insights into the state of trance, what’s in store for the the scene, and (of course) his buddy Markus Schulz. Before doing anything else, including reading this interview, check out his set below if you missed the vibes. While he played a solid mix of new stuff (including his forthcoming track), he also dipped into the archives and brought out a few vaunted members of the old guard — like 2009’s “Beautiful,” an insane bootleg of the ever-funky “Praise You” by Fatboy Slim, and of course recent Beatport-topper “Gouryella.” And let’s not forget his recent collaboration with Giuseppe Ottavani, “Magenta,” which is certainly old at heart.

His live sets are always some of the best mainstage material, with impeccable mixing and his signature mashups that keep you on your toes at all times. He has become a favorite of Axwell and Axtone’s, recently putting together the Axtone 2012 compilation that featured plenty of his own material, new and old, in addition to showing off the label’s impressive recent discography, while also dusting off a critically acclaimed Essential Mix to finish off 2012. He has been a cornerstone of recent festivals such as UMF, Coachella & EDC New York and has taken his Fanfare tour all across the globe. He will be at Tomorrowland, for all you lucky festival goers who snuck in there in during the one second sellout. His remix for OneRepublic’s “Feel Again” was recently released for free, to the delight of everyone who had been waiting many months for it to be released. What he has coming up on the docket is relatively unknown, but he is known for his quality with each release and as he stated in terms of his productions, “There will be some surprises in 2013”.

We had the chance to talk to Thomas Gold a few months back about his plans for 2013, including the OneRepublic remix, his first gig, weird food experiences, possible label ventures and more. Check out his set from Ultra below and the interview after the jump.

Exclusive, Featured, Interviews | Dzeko & Torres Talk Food, Beginnings, Dance Music in Canada & more in an Interview with FNT

Posted by on December 29, 2012

Canadian duo, Julian Dzeko & Luis Torres, better known as Dzeko & Torres have come a very long way since their single “Confronted” was released on Chuckie’s Dirty Dutch Digital Vol. 4 just a year and a half ago. The long time friends quickly found that working with each other would be the ideal working situation and from there it was only a matter of time before it took off. They were able to grow their profile with free remixes of Monsters and Men “King and Lionheart” and Animal Kingdom “Strange Attractor” that promptly spread like wildfire. They had a track signed to Michael Woods’ Diffused Records, a remix of Trey Songz “Heart Attack” on Atlantic Records, their collab with ANSOL, “Yeah” on Mixmash, and their most recent release, their “Hey EP” on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak imprint.

However, their biggest success was with their remix of Chuckie’s “Who Is Ready To Jump” that even as they said half jokingly “literally I think Afrojack’s mom dropped it”. They were able to get gigs on both sides of the Atlantic, expanding their growing influence outside of the confines of Toronto into London, Miami and elsewhere. Having just signed to AM Only and with consistent support from some of the biggest names in the game like Tiesto, Steve Aoki, Chuckie and others, the sky is the limit for these guys. Start the interview below and check out the rest after the jump as we discuss advise they were given from another DJ, future plans and their love for food. I was talking to both of them at the same time, but it is mainly Luis Torres who was communicating during the interview.

FNT: When did you guys decide that you wanted to work together and make this official?

D&T: It actually started pretty soon after we met. We used to promote and frequent all ages club events in Toronto and we both had a love for house music (i guess people call it EDM now) and then i remember Julian went to a Tiesto show and pretty much as soon as he got home, he was convincing his parents to help him buy some CDJs. I had already been fooling around in FL Studio for a year or 2 and so we decided to start working with eachother and learn off eachother. Took about 2 years of goofing around for us to finally take it seriously though.

FNT: When, if at all did it hit you that doing this could really work?

D&T: I think originally we were just having fun, just doing it because we truly enjoyed it. I never really felt like my goofing around in FL would ever take me anywhere and im sure that Julian didnt think that buying CDJs would get him anywhere either. It took a while, but i think the breakthough point for us was when we started talking to Chuckie and he gave us a release on Dirty Dutch, which at the time was one of our favourite labels and we felt like it was massive for us.

Electro-House | Dzeko & Torres – Hey EP

Posted by on December 18, 2012

Toronto duo, Dzeko & Torres make their Dim Mak debut with a three track EP comprised of two new records, “Hey” and “Check This Out”, as well as the previously released for free download “Buppy”. “Hey”, highlights the tougher side of their sound, using a prolonged riser and grungy low end. “Buppy”, the free download, continues along the vein of harder electro tracks that this EP brings to the table as a standout Dim Mak release with its punchy bass line and grinding synths. “Check This Out” brings together a distorted bass line with high pitched synths and what would a track be without an air horn? Interview to come later this week with the guys, you will want to stick around for this one.

Hip-Hop | Dylan Owen Interview & Freestyle [FNT Exclusive]

Posted by on October 17, 2012

The first time I heard Dylan Owen was just about a year ago. He had just submitted “All I Do” to our “Sheeps, Jeeps, and Beats” contest with Jon Kilmer (which he eventually won), and I was completely infatuated by his expeditious delivery and sharp wit. Who knew at that point that we were playing a role in unleashing a star. That a project as honest, introspective, and imaginative as Keep Your Friends Close was in the making. Months after that release, Dylan has become one of the most compelling and promising artists of the year, showcasing an amount of creativity and lyrical depth that few emcees can compete with—record deal or not. As I strive to bring more lyrically-focused hip-hop artists to the FNT limelight, Dylan is a perfect place to start. That said, we are proud to bring you an FNT exclusive: a freestyle and interview that highlights Dylan’s pure lyrical power, wit, charm, and heart—those qualities that make him the special musician that he is. Check the video below, and if you have managed to miss it thus far, here is his most recent EP, the phenomenal Keep Your Friends Close EP.

If you didn’t already know, Huey Mack is on his first headlining tour. He made a stop by Minnesota so we met up to kick it and shoot another interview. We also called up Mod Sun to meet Huey for the first time, although they’ve been on a track together. After the show we took the party to Mod Sun’s home studio where Huey recorded a verse on an awesome Riff Raff/Mod Sun track. This video includes the “Uncovered” interview along with a short recap of that night.
