Hip-Hop | OnCue – Rich Kid (Prod. Brenton Duvall & CJ Luzi)

Cuey just released his second song of the week, Rich Kid. With the help of Brenton Devuall and CJ Luzi this track is hot. Here’s what Brenton had to say about the track:

“I sent this shit to OnCue about two months ago. When we were first working with it, it sounded super swaggy. Some Houston x Brooklyn shit. I don’t know what it was really, but I really fucked with the feel of the track. I was sampling this, to begin with. Anyway, what started out as a quick, fun track eventually evolved into something a whole lot better. Once CJ got his hands on the beat, it really got taken to the next level. This is definitely the best shit I’ve ever been a part of and is what I consider to be part of the beginning of a completely new path for OnCue. I 100% believe that he is going to do some really important things in music. Not rap music, but all music. He’s definitely one of the smartest and most creative rappers I’ve ever seen let alone met. I’ve been telling everyone not to sleep on him but I think I’m done doing that. At this point, if you aren’t giving Cue a listen, it’s only a problem for you. I don’t know how much good shit I can say about him, and at this point I’m rambling, so fuck it. Enjoy Rich Kid.”

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Saigon – Warning Shots 3 [Mixtape]

Posted by on January 29, 2012

After once vowing to retire after he dropped his first (and only) album,

“Whatever the case may be, We do a census on who is the sickest lyricist, they say me, That’s without a album out, y’all rated me, I drop one and I’mma bow out gracefully” – Saigon

…the Yardfather returns with the third installment of his Warning Shots mixtape, One Foot In The Grave.  Hungrier and more determined than ever, Saigitty follows up last years album (one of my personal favorites of the year), The Greatest Story Never Told [Purchase Here], with a cut-throat project once again proving to fans and critics that he’s one of the hardest lyricists out. The tape definitely holds true to his “underground” image, banging heavy with executive production from the one and only, Just Blaze.  The Brooklyn native has already confirmed another album is on the way, and judging by the work Sai’s been putting in lately, I’d say it’s coming very soon.  Below are a few of my favorite cuts:

Hip-Hop | Phony Ppl – Phonyland (Mixtape)

Posted by on January 18, 2012

To be honest, I had never heard of Phony Ppl before today. After giving them a listen, this is one of the most unique and interesting bands I’ve ever heard. Phony Ppl hail from Brooklyn and are made up of 9 group members. However picking a genre for them is tough though, they incorporate so many different sounds with jazz riffs to electro synths to laid back guitar tracks, which never seems to bore. Good verses on so many of the songs but then they switch it up and hit you with some R&B. This is the type of music that I really appreciate because so much thought and time went into this, 3 years to be exact. This is definitely a Must Download. Even if you don’t like it, it’s worth it to check out and appreciate these guys’ artistic ability. Check out their Facebook Here.

RnB | Leonard Friend – Serious Music

Posted by on January 13, 2012

Introducing Leonard Friend, an R&B/Pop artist based out of Los Angeles, CA in the mold of Justin Timberlake & Robin Thicke (high praise yes, but there are some similarities.) Leonard Friend almost quit music during the winter of 2010 when he decided to leave his post as front man of the now defunt Brooklyn band, The XYZ. Whether you like Leonard Friend or not, you must respect the ridiculous dancing he pulls off while sitting in a chair. Look for Leonard’s first project, EP Lynyrd Frynd dropping January 30th.

Hip-Hop, Videos | DeStorm ft. Talib Kweli – Finally Free [Video]

I recently came across an unknown hip-hop artist by the name of DeStorm and was pleasantly surprised. It appears he has a strong enough following to land a feature from Talib Kweli on this track, despite the fact he’s been laying below my radar.  From what I’ve heard so far, he appears to be a very candid artist with a dynamic delivery.  He maintains that underground form with his music, staying very down to earth and resisting the temptation to sell out what he believes in most; the music.

P.S. No confirmation yet, but I believe DeStorm’s got a song/video coming out with the Epic Mealtime Baconator.
