Posted by on August 24, 2021

Penelope Darling is a rising UK based singer/songwriter who smoothly puts in elements of pop, r&b and more into one cohesive emotionally charged soundscape. Her new R&B ballad “Tears Rub Red” is an emotional response to the hardest time in the life of Penelope; the heartache, struggle and strength of which you can hear in every R&B melody and pensive pause. Check it out above now.

Writing music is my therapy. Having the ability to create something beautiful, out of a dark situation is like magic. This song is honest and vulnerable like nothing else I’ve ever written. The beauty of songwriting is that you discover all these emotions that you didn’t know you had. You learn so much about yourself, as well as allowing yourself to heal. If you’re someone that heals with music, I hope you find a connection with this song that allows you to do that.”

R&B | Producer Slavvy releases his dark new single and video “Lavender”

Posted by on July 16, 2021

Veteran producer and multi-instrumentalist Slavvy has dropped his genre-blurring new single and video “Lavender”. The channels elements of dark synthwave,  R&B and bedroom pop and rolls them into one ultra satisfying deep dive into one man’s tale of hedonism and recklessness. Delving into the darker corners of human-psyche, “Lavender” is Slavvy’s no holds barred statement of “take me as I am” to a lover. Featuring synths with a serious 1980s feel and and a visual (Slavvy and Juan Orta)  that optically resembles the cult-classic Nicolas Winding Refn film, Drive or the beloved vaporwave genre. It’s got all the bells and whistles – sensual neon lighting, fast cars, cash, and an unbothered looking Slavvy as he sings about his darker side.

Speaking of the sentiment behind the track, Slavvy shares “Lavender is getting caught doing something you shouldn’t. You’re f*cked up, you’re cheating, you’re out behind your lover’s back, but something is going wrong.” Slavvy explains. “They know you’re stepping out, they catch you, they show up, the person you’re with is on some bullsh*t and you regret stepping out to begin with.”

If you haven’t (yet) heard of Slavvy, you might remember this accomplished producer from his days performing under the moniker Abdecaf. Counting Diplo as a fan, Abdecaf tore up the US festival circuit back in the day and released projects that streamed in the millions. We’re excited to see what’s to come from this talented, multi-faceted artist as he gears up to release his full project “Romantic” in the fall.

Alternative, R&B | London-based singer SAI drops new single “SHAME”

Posted by on June 28, 2021

London-based singer, songwriter & visual artist SAI (pronounced ‘say’, a backronym for ‘Sing About It’) treats us to the final piece of art from her EP ‘RE’: a song entitled ‘Shame’. A straight-up R&B classic, this break-up song sees SAI handling the blowout like a queen. Her slick lyrics inject a major dose of female kick-ass attitude, with just enough vulnerability for fans to relate to the emotions. Far from bitter, she sings:” Shame on you boy, it’s a shame for you boy” – let’s just say, we wouldn’t wanna be that guy! The track is blessed with SAI’s consistently dreamy vocals, showcasing her sultry lower tones in the verses, with some very Mariah-esque backing vocals in the pre-chorus, before soaring up to a stunning falsetto in the sing-along chorus. Smooth soulful R&B chords played by a light-hearted synth set the mood of the track from the start, followed by the hard-hitting 808’s and drums punching through the chorus. This mid-tempo break-up anthem draws influence from renowned producers like “The Underdogs” with a vibe so fresh, yet so reminiscent of the ‘Back in The Day” R&B we love and miss so much.

R&B | MIIESHA Brings a Message of Strength with New Single/Video “Damaged”

Posted by on May 17, 2021

R&B singer-songwriter Miiesha is known for music that “captures the complexity of the individual Indigenous experience through universally appealing songs” (ABC Australia) and today, she returns with “Damaged”, an unabashedly vulnerable take on intergenerational trauma and grief.  Produced by LUCIANBLOMKAMP (6lack) with vocal production from Simon Cohen (Justin Beiber), “Damaged” showcases the depth of Miiesha’s soulful vocals and ability to convey the intricacies of the human experience, taking listeners on a deep dive into the pain and disconnect that accompanies familial loss.

Released alongside the single, is the stunningly cinematic visual for “Damaged”. Featuring images of Miiesha’s real family (her brothers, sister, and aunt), viewers are given an intimate look into a family’s struggle as they wrestle with feelings of grief, each member doing so in their own unique way.

In the visual project, Miiesha is faced with the difficulty of letting go after losing her grandmother, who is symbolically represented as the car she’s sitting in–damaged itself and unable to help carry the family forward. Despite the turbulence of the family’s mourning and each of their individual struggles, when the chorus hits, the conflict ends and dancing begins. Miiesha explains this shift “shows that you cannot break away from your family, your bloodline, your connection, no matter how much pain lies between you.” Ultimately realizing that despite this she must overcome, reclaim her power and find her own way to move forward for herself.
