The Chainsmokers are back with another remix. Surprisingly, I wasn’t that big a fan of their previous remix but I really enjoy this one. It seems they have carved out their own sub genre of progressive house mixed with indie and they do it well. For their latest project they took to remixing Smallpools’ “Dreaming” and they’ve done so in their typical fashion. This may be one of my favorites of theirs.

Indie, Interviews, Progressive House | ASTR – Operate (The Chainsmokers Remix) + Exclusive Interview

artworks-000050858290-zkvjfa-t500x500 It has been roughly four months since my hand slightly grazed my sister’s friend’s thigh. Coincidentally, it has also been about four months since I first heard of The Chainsmokers. Since then, my hand has been many places but none as sweet as that. I have also watched The Chainsmokers grow from two decent looking guys to two excellent looking guys who make awesome music. Their first remix that got my attention was of Jonsi’s “Around Us”. That track… it made me feel for the first time. Sara B, the girl who had a crush on me in eleventh grade, I get you now. The Chainsmokers taught me how to love. Since then I’ve learned to take it, roll it up into a ball, toss it in the air and if there’s not a steady current of wind, I smash that into oblivion.

Picture yourself walking through the city late one night when you see a beautiful girl sitting in a coffee shop eating a plum. She is facing outward toward the street and the store’s walls are glass so you two can see each other. You want to go talk to her but you can’t find the door to get in. Not being able to figure out where the entrance is, you go up to the glass and relentlessly stare at her. Upon closer inspection you realize that she is in fact eating an oddly shaped apple not a plum. “Why are you eating an apple?” you mouth to her. You can hear her say through the glass while turning the apple “no no, this is a plum”. After seeing the flesh of the fruit it is indeed a plum.  You then turn around to go home and find $20 on the ground.

The combination of slight disappointment, confusion, and joy that night brings is what I think of their latest remix.

We also had a chance to talk to them about life’s most important questions, such as “If you were to suddenly wake up in the middle of the night for seemingly no reason and upon looking to the nearest wall saw a hole that has never been there before the size of the middle, cardboard part of a roll of toilet paper, would you stick stuff in it?”. Click past the break if you want to laugh, cry, and be inspired.

DO SOMETHING

Hip-Hop, Rap, Videos | Sam Lachow – King Lear

Posted by on June 10, 2013

Sam Lachow has been on my radar for quite some time now. The young man has proved himself time and time again with his soulful sound and self-aware rapping. However, “King Lear” is different. Sam goes a few steps deeper with his introspection and really digs in to his life and career as a rapper thus far. Perhaps it was the self-produced instrumental, or the self-directed and edited video? Either way, this song is more personal than much of Sam’s music, a trait that I endlessly respect and enjoy.

Take a gander at “King Lear” above, and be sure to tweet out #kinglear for a chance to win some cool prizes from the young Seattle emcee.

Cover, RnB, Videos | John Mayer – Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (SoMo Rendition)

Posted by on June 3, 2013

Another Monday morning, another chance for smooth singing, Joseph SoMo to boggle my mind with his latest cover. This week, he takes on a John Mayer tune. No easy feat, even for a singer of SoMo’s caliber. The result though, is astounding. Every track SoMo takes on, he meets it with emotion tenfold of the original. He finds ways to relate to the lyrics he’s singing, and tell his own story, even though he didn’t write it. But if you want something phenomenal that he DID write, check out his latest original here. Remember the name Joseph SoMo ladies and gentleman, and don’t forget it.

Progressive House | Admonic & Davies – Ascension

Growing up as a male in an upper middle class white family was rough. Nobody ever gave me a chance. Luckily though, my parents bought me a Macbook and I became a blogger. That all accumulated today when I came across this track. It is very rare that I find something with such exceptional production quality from such seemingly unknown producers. “Ascension” is what I believe progressive house should be. I’m not saying I no longer enjoy it, but it’s obvious that the genre has turned drastically commercial. This track, however, is a true diamond in the rough. Resembling a tad to Porter Robinson’s “Language”, it boasts bright melodies and pulsating synths that are sure to leave you aroused. The best part is, it’s free.

Indie, Progressive House | Phoenix – Trying To Be Cool (The Chainsmokers Remix)

Much like the overweight girl with a great personality, The Chainsmokers have, for the most part, been ignored. Ignored by unattractive girls and the aforementioned overweight girl that is, because they know they have no chance with these guys. Damn they’re attractive. I haven’t actually seen them, except in my dreams, but I imagine with their multiple 100k plus played tracks on Soundcloud that it would be so. Continuing their trend of remixing indie bands, the duo have decided to take a spin at remixing Phoenix’s “Trying To Be Cool”. If you know of The Chainsmokers then you know what to expect from this. A fun, upbeat song with a hint of both house and indie. They have definitely done this track justice, with this possibly being better than the original.
