Albums | Electro-soul guitarist/producer Phyphr unveils debut LP Catalyst
Posted by VMan on March 2, 2023
Guitarist/producer Phyphr is one of Denver’s most hotly-tipped talents, making waves with his electro-soul stylings and funky, electronic songwriting. Dedicated to inspiring his listeners, the artist has a DIY, self-produced ethos that’s intrinsic to his artistic expression and messaging: for Phyphr, everyone should be empowered to find their passion and make positive change for themselves and the world.
Phyphr’s own hard work and focus have led to a unique performance style that blends live guitar playing with immaculate electronic production – a vibrant mix that’s earned him opportunities to perform alongside acts like The Floozies, Daily Bread, Manic Focus, SoDown, and Maddy O’Neal.
Now, the dynamic maestro releases his debut album, Catalyst – a genre-hopping, full-length LP that’s brimming with raucous beats, textural grooves, and indelible hooks. Chronicling Phyphr’s ongoing journey as an artist, Catalyst is designed to spark creative inspiration in his listeners through vivid, relatable storytelling and honest reflection.
Fans got their first tastes of Catalyst with the blues-inflected “Seven Days,” featuring fellow Denver-based producer Kaptain; the boisterous, bass-fueled “Down The Street”; “Still Turnin’,” a bouncy homage to the glory of used record stores and finding musical gems in their dusty bins; and “Reaction,” a hip-hop-infused electronic cut that stays true to the LP’s central message.
The creative versatility and motivational spirit of Catalyst is perfectly encapsulated in the track “In The Clouds,” an amorphous collaboration with fellow-Denver genre-bender Manic Focus. Filled to the brim with summery guitar licks, infectious bass wubs, trumpet samples, and expertly chopped-up vocal samples, “In The Clouds” is a jubilant and vivacious sonic experience that sets a free-spirited vibe for the rest of the LP.
There’s also tracks like “Connection,” a 70s-funk pastiche recontextualized through a modern electronic lens. With groovy basslines, synth melodies, and vocoder-inflected vocals mixed with propulsive drum patterns, deep bass, and twangy blues guitar parts, “Connection” is a masterful genre-traversing track that brings its vintage aesthetic into a futuristic setting.
Catalyst is rounded out by tracks such as the hazy, laid back “Long Way Out,” the space-age dubstep track “The 80’s,” and the anthemic “Where You Are,” a collaboration with vocalist Kanika Moore and electronic music keyboardist Jason Leech (who’s opened for Galantis, GRiZ, and Big Gigantic).
With intricately concocted electronic bangers and soundscapes complemented by a contagious aura of positivity, Catalyst acutely introduces listeners to Phyphr’s sonic and philosophical sensibilities – a combination that is sure to charm any fans new or old and inspire them to chase their dreams.
This spring, fans can catch Phyphr’s live performance prowess at shows across Colorado in support of jamtronica band Sunsquabi before his headlining slot at Denver’s art experience space Meow Wolf Denver in April. This summer, the producer will head to Illinois for Summer Camp Music Festival before returning to Colorado again for Sonic Bloom.
Albums | MXSY Makes Statement With Trap Monster “Calentura”
Posted by VMan on March 1, 2023
FUXWITHIT is always on the hunt for the next wave of artists taking bass music to new heights. The never-ending quest has taken the label to Dublin, Ireland with the discovery of 15-year-old production sensation MXSY. Don’t let his age or follower count fool you, MXSY is up next. A slew of incredible self-releases have been building his catalog and hype. Add in a single on the always impressive dumb collective and a remix of Gurf’s ‘Big Gurl’ and it’s clear that MXSY is gearing up to take over the electronic trap scene. With the release of ‘Calentura’ on FUXWITHIT, MXSY is about to put everyone on notice.
“Calentura” is one of the year’s stand-out trap bangers. The opening melody and atmospherics set the tone with an alluring and addictive sound. The feverish vocal drives things forward as it’s bent and chopped over the course of the track, giving the song its namesake. The drops are devastating and riddled with bass, finding a pocket that’s true trap perfection. What makes ‘Calentura’ so exciting is the progression. Even within the drops, MXSY is constantly keeping listeners on their toes, whether it’s feaking the bass, twisting the melodies, or mixing up the percussion. “Calentura” proves MXSY should be everyone’s artists to watch list for 2023 and sets the bar for trap bangers this year.
“My goal when creating ‘Calentura’ was to create a strange, atmospheric kind of landscape, and then switch it up completely for the drop, with a groovy beat and a weird bass sound to catch listeners off guard. I wanted listeners to always be on their toes, not knowing what is coming next. For example, they are waiting for the drop, just for it to be teased for 4 bars, then all of a sudden have it smacked in their faces!” -MXSY

Lyrically, it’s a break-up song that hears him get candid about losing someone special.Elaborating further, Samuel says, “I wanted to write a break-up song, as I was in a sad place in my relationship and thinking it was coming to an end. This song felt like preparation for how I would feel if my girlfriend and I broke up – how lost I would feel and how much I wouldn’t know how to love someone as much as I love her. I would just have to live with loving her, without her, eternally.” “Where’s My Love Gonna Go?”

The compilation starts the intriguing and mysterious vibes of “New Evils” and closes out with a cinematic masterpiece, “Sedation”. There are nine hypnotic tracks in total, each one embodying one-of-a-kind soundscapes and telling its own story.
Speaking on her inaugural mixtape, fknsyd shares, “’Taste.test’ is a compilation of songs I made over the last year or two. With my personal music, I do everything myself, and I don’t feel overly confident about most of the skills involved in that process. As much as I’d like to only share things I feel completely satisfied with, I don’t think it needs to be that serious, and I realize whatever that standard is for me will be ever-changing. It doesn’t make me happy to stockpile a bunch of music. I admire people who share their art, so to me, this is a step in the direction of feeling more comfortable doing that.” All together, Taste.test acts as a preview of the exciting things to come for fknsyd as she puts her heart and soul into her solo identity.
