Events | Five Things We Can’t Wait For At Electric Zoo 2013
Posted by Spice on August 8, 2013
Summer is flying by, which is bittersweet on one hand but totally amazing on the other. Why? Because it means that we’re getting closer and closer to Electric Zoo’s blowout fifth year. If you’re not up on your EZoo life, check out our official recap video from last year and see what you missed. Yeah — it was pretty killer. Fortunately, this year is already shaping up to be bigger and better than ever for many reasons, not least of which are:
1) Two mainstages (count ’em, TWO) and an expanded festival site on Randall’s Island. More on that later.
2) A new 18 and up policy. Sorry, youths (#YOUTHS) of the world — I’m too old for your shenanigans and look forward to mingling with an older and wiser crowd. *Wheezes; testily gestures for you to GET OFF MY LAWN.*
3) A totally killer lineup — which is par for the course by EZoo’s standards. There’s lots to be excited about here, but we’ve come up with five things that we’re especially stoked for. Check ’em out after the jump.
Albums | Dog Blood Leaks Middle Finger Pt. 2 EP In Advance of Release
Posted by Spice on August 7, 2013
Leaky sneaky ????

Anyone dismayed by the news about Dog Blood’s upcoming EP getting delayed until August 20th should head immediately to the duo’s Soundcloud page, where Middle Finger Pt. 2 can now be streamed in full (well, almost in full; there’s a Trapmasters remix of the titular track that doesn’t appear to be up yet). Most of this should sound familiar — between festival sets and Skrillex’s recent BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, it’s likely that you’ve heard “Middle Finger Pt. 2,” “Chella Ride” and “Shred Sled (Kill ‘Em With The Beat)” before. Also of note: a typically great M Machine remix of “Middle Finger Pt. 2” that gets positively savage. Check it out below, and support the great work that Skrillex and Boys Noize are doing by purchasing the EP when it drops officially on the 20th.
Electronic, House, Techno | Balance Presents Guy J
Posted by Spice on August 5, 2013
“Oh. Wow.”
That was my reaction after getting about four minutes into Guy J’s mix for the second volume of Balance Music’s Balance Presents series — and I’m happy to say that the mind blowing factor only increases as the mix progresses. The best sets take you on a journey, and here the Israeli producer (and John Digweed protege) accomplishes just that. Will this get you seriously in the zone on the dance floor? Yes. Will it also provide the perfect counterpoint to a tedious Excel-based work project during the 9-to-5 hours? Absolutely. Guy J’s lush, melancholic style just works like that. In fact, in terms of vibe alone, this mix kind of reminds me of late 90’s Paul Oakenfold (albeit with a bit of a bpm differential) — because for 80 otherworldy minutes, it manages to hit every stirring and atmospheric note in the book. To shamelessly borrow from SNL’s Stefon, this mix has everything: deep builds, sitars, eerie vocals, psychedelic soundscapes, and melodies that will haunt your dreams. Cruise over to Beatport for the full package and check out the entire tracklist after the jump.

Electro-House | Mord Fustang – Something Right Meow
Posted by Spice on August 5, 2013
I’ve been needing some new Mord Fustang in my life for a while now, and happily enough the music gods decided to deliver today. “Something Right Meow” is textbook Mord — I think we can all agree that no one does kaleidoscopic soundscapes and driving basslines quite like the young Estonian producer. For your own sake, download this one right meow.

House, Mix | Defected and Loco Dice Present: Loco Dice in the House [Mix]
Posted by Spice on July 22, 2013
It’s hot as hell outside right now and to me that means one thing: all house, all the time. House strikes the perfect balance between languor and funk — it’s the musical equivalent of an ice cold glass of lemonade, preferably spiked with a splash (or four) of tequila and preferably consumed underneath a cabana between the hours of 12 and 2 pm. If this sounds like it’s up your alley, then it’s your lucky day — house denizen and perennial industry heavyweight Loco Dice has just teamed up with renowned label Defected to present Loco Dice in the House, a massive two-part mix that combines banner names like Diplo with the well-honed sound that Loco Dice has become known for throughout the course of his storied career.
Preview the mix in the above teaser vid to get the vibe, and be sure to check out the full track list after the jump.

FYI | The DJ Mag Top 100 Poll Is Live, Thank God
Posted by Spice on July 16, 2013
Has it really only been five minutes nine months since the results of the 2012 DJ Mag Top 100 Poll? Wow. That totally flew by.
The DJ Mag poll is more than just a poll, of course; it’s an increasingly dominant internet sideshow that is about to become a larger part of your life than you’d probably like. How we’ve missed the pageantry of it all — the fervent sense of camaraderie that gets expressed through status updates (see above); the earnest pleas to our finer sensibilities (“a vote for Steve Aoki is a vote for pandas!”); the reliable kvetching from @Deadmau5 (“lol fuk this poll…even though I always crush the top 5 #whatever”); and, of course, the overwhelming sense of inevitability anticipation (spoiler alert: Armin wins in 2013). The only thing better than Shark Week is the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll!
In truth, this year’s poll is already shaping up to be even more unbearable than ever, due to two very distinct forces coming together to create a veritable perfect storm of awfulness:
1) Hashtags over everything. (Case in point: Ferry Corsten is now a hashtag on his own Facebook page.)
2) The EDM Explosion of 2010-Present — or whatever phrase du jour you, your grandmother, and/or The New York Times are using to refer to this awesome/terrible watershed moment in our musical metanarrative.
So if you think you’re in for anything more than a whole lotta this for the next three months…well, LOL, bro. That’s adorable.
House, Preview | Disclosure – F For You (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix) [Preview]
Posted by Spice on July 16, 2013
Mark my words: 2013 will go down as the summer of Disclosure. Settle has already taken the blogosphere/world by storm, so it’s not terribly surprising that high profile remixes are beginning to pop up.
With “F For You,” the consummate niche-occupier/genre-defier better known as TEED takes an already great song and ramps it up about seven levels. Where Disclosure’s original is tight, polished, and crisp to a fault, TEED’s is spacey, a bit dark, and hypnotically stripped down. Damn. I might like this more than the original, and I like the original quite a bit. Keep your eyes peeled for a release date — not shocking/almost fitting that this went up without one.
