Dshaq’s Top Ten of 2012

I keep finding it harder and harder to believe that a new year is upon us. To put it in lay man’s terms, 2012 was a pretty dope year. Just to name a few examples, we saw:

1) Chicago Rap take over
2) The emergence of new rappers into the game such as Joey Bada$$, Chief Keef, and Trinidad Jame$.
3) Anything Kanye touches is automatically amazing

The year proved to broaden my musical taste and allow me to venture into different genres. So without further ado, I present my top ten tracks of 2012. Enjoy.

10. Bandz A Maker Her Dance – Juicy J

Now you might be wondering where the (Ft. Lil’ Wayne and 2Chainz) was, but don’t worry, it was meant to be left out. I have been enamored with Juicy J in 2012 and he is hands down my pick for Rapper of the year. The song was so good that Juicy realized he could make some serious dough off it and recruited Weezy and 2Chainz for the iTunes version.

9. Language – Porter Robinson

Words that come to mind when listening to this song: Catchy, Banger, Awesome, Amazing, etc; The list goes on and on. Pretty sure almost everybody likes this song, and if you don’t then something is wrong with you. Definitely the Levels of 2012…I went there.

8. Daily Routine – Joey Bada$$

While Survival Tactics (R.I.P. Capital Steez) and Hardknock may have put Joey Bada$$ on the map, I don’t think Joey really has a best song. The whole tape made for one of the best of the year, start to finish. Daily Routine caught my attention the most with that catchy and easy beat mixed with Joey’s smooth flow.

7. Pocket Full Ft. Key Wayne – Chip Tha Ripper

Key Wayne + Chip tha Ripper might be collab of the year. Key Wayne beat and singing + Chip’s flow = perfection. Not much else to say.

6. Money Trees (ft. Jay Rock) – Kendrick Lamar

Well good kid, m.A.A.d. city probably was the best album of the year, but Kendrick also made one of the best songs of the year in Money Trees. All aspects of the song are on point, but Kendrick’s story telling ability is what really gets me. Remember “The one in front of the gun lives forever”.

5. Pretty Flacko – A$AP Rocky

While it seems this song came out forever ago, this one actually came out on the first day of 2012. THe beat was produced by Spaceghostpurrp and has a more heavy hitting sound than we’re used to hearing from Rocky. Who would’ve thought Rocky could go in on a trap banger. Blast this whenever you need some extra energy or to get pumped up, it should do the trick.

4. Just What IAm – Kid Cudi

This is the type of song that made me become such a big Cudi fan. The beat, the verses, the chorus, everything about it just works. Cudi’s weed anthem shows that he’s back to his OG stuff, which makes us all happy campers.

3. To The World – Kanye West Ft. R. Kelly

Just when you thought Kanye couldn’t do anymore magic, he brings back the King of R&B and makes one of his dopest tracks ever. We learned a lot of stuff from this track: Deuces minus one equals your middle finger,R. Kelly is back, Mitt Romney don’t pay no tax, and finally Kanye is the only black man in Beverly Hills. You learn something new everyday. Thanks Kanye!

2. 3HUNNA – Chief Keef

This one brings back memories because this was the first Chief Keef song I ever heard. Definitely a milestone in my young life. Young Chop absolutely killed this beat while Sosa did his thing with some quality verses and one catchy chorus. Check out his new album and look for Chief Keef to have a big 2013.

1. Prom Night – Chance The Rapper

Without a doubt my number one song of the year. While Brain Cells is another favorite Chance song, it lacks the energy that Prom Night gives off. THe vintage sample mixed with Chance’s ability to not only rap but sing as well, makes this my number one song of the year. Big things for Mr. Bennett in 2013.
