Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman Interview

Posted by on April 7, 2012

Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman have been on a tear lately with their single “Roll The Dice” that has been supported by just about every DJ under the sun. They have become known for their impeccable uplifting progressive house remixes for the likes of Dinka, Coldplay and others. 2011 was a great year for them as they were able to have a high studio output of remixes with some originals mixed in. 2012 will be even bigger, with a greater focus on their own songs, while still making their impeccable remixes. In this interview they discuss their remixing process, who they acknowledge in the crowd, and what is coming up next for the duo. If you have not already get their single “Roll The Dice” and check them out on Facebook & Twitter. Also just a thought, isn’t it redundant to say “Exclusive Interview” because they are in reality all exclusive.

Give a little introduction, possibly a fun fact about yourselves people wouldn’t normally guess.

Dimitri is Greek and has a deep passion for Heavy Metal
Wyman is Swedish and has a deep passion for Gangsta Rap

Why did Dimitri Vangelis get to keep his full name and Wyman is just Wyman?

We thought Wyman would be a better option in terms of PR and Marketing.

How did you guys meet and get started Djing and making music?

We found each other on the Internet, met up, and here we are.

“Roll The Dice” has garnered support from just about every Dj around the world and just one example is this quote from Michael Weermets describing you guys in a recent interview with DMC World Magazine, “THE bigroom smashers from Sweden. Insane sense for melodies and atmosphere.” What does it mean to have such a successful single and so much support, personally, and for the rest of your career?

Well, as far as the support goes it’s a big honor, seeing big names dropping nice comments about your track, including it in mixtapes and live sets is really the things that keeps you going. The single was a great success yeah, but it’s only the beginning, at least that is what we believe.

You guys have a propensity to make smashing remixes; how do you guys decide what songs to remix?

We are pretty picky to be honest, if we feel the original has potential with our sound we go for it. We don’t feel like doing remixes that already are super big or really close to our type of sound. And one thing more you guys should know is that you will rarely see us doing a remix of a non vocal track…

What was your first gig and how does it compare to your latest gig in particular, your show opening for Tiesto at UKEN Festival in Norway on the March 13th.

You could say that the Tiesto gig was our first gig together where we could play exactly what we wanted. It was really great and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. It became an DV&W ID fest at the end, but that was all fun and the new tracks worked! Thanks to Tiesto and the crew for having us!

What is it about Sweden, particularly Stockholm where you guys are from, that allows for there to be so many successful Djs. Is it the cold, the water, the women?

We think there is a big passion and understanding about EDM here, there are so many successful DJ’s/Producers coming from Sweden. They are passing the knowledge and experience on. Apart from that we don’t think there is much more to it. Sweden is really small and everybody knows everybody…

Do you guys have musical training and do you think it is important for making electronic music?

No training, but over time you develop an ear for chords and you know where you might go next. It´s important for us but might not be to others, the key to harmonies and melodies is knowing what you’re doing. otherwise it just seems random and unmusical.

What is your favorite drink order at the bar?

D: I would say Gin with some lime slices in it
W: Beer

Who are the people you point out or acknowledge in the crowd at shows?

That’s a hard one, but basically people that are dancing their butt off, singing along, or are just happy. It’s pretty important to show your appreciation to your crowd.

What would be your dream collaboration?

Oh that’s a hard one, there are to many…

As an outsider looking in, how do you think the meteoric rise of EDM in the past few years in the US has impacted EDM in general?

We don’t really think the big boom has come yet. But in general it’s a super good thing. Perhaps it’s starting to become a bit more commercialized, but we believe that is a piece of the puzzle that needs to be there, there will always be underground genres, no worries.

Coming off of your single “Roll The Dice”, you guys have been tweeting non-stop about remixes and originals being made in the studio. When will we hear these songs in 2012 and what do you have in store for this year?

Yeah, we are not tweeting over nothing, we have a bunch of originals and remixes coming up. And the next single will be out late in April, aswell as a new remix for a big artist and very big vocalist. Apart from those releases, a not to big but steady flow of quality originals and remixes throughout 2012.

What would you say to someone like my dad, a jazz musician, who says DJs are not musicians?

He would be amazed of how good musicians some DJ’s are. One’s mind should not be locked in on only one genre. Good music will always be good music, regardless of genre.

Tell your dad that a lot of DJ’s could actually play jazz, how many jazz artists could actually produce dance music and dj? Perhaps a great deal, who knows…
