Newcentz’ fight with adversity has molded his heart into a chilling organ. Growing up in West Baltimore, life has not been the easiest for this budding artist. It all started with Newcentz being incarcerated at 16 years old, serving a three and a half year sentence. And then recently the 23 year old artist just lost his friend to a senseless murder at a Baltimore lounge. Putting all of this pain into his music is what will push his progression. The end goal with a career in music is for his three daughters, so that they don’t have to live with the battles that he has faced.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Ace Cosgrove – UsvsRobots (Mixtape)

Posted by on October 7, 2014

Ace Cosgrove hails from the DMV, and is no newcomer to Fresh New Tracks. His soulful twist on rap saw him relative success leading up to the release of this tape. And now that UsvsRobots is finally available to the world, it’s only a matter of time before things really propel to the next level.

The DMV has been incredibly strong recently, and everyone is awaiting the next artist to pop. Take a listen below and see why it might just be Ace Cosgrove.

Hip-Hop, Rap | Rome Fortune – Lights Low

Posted by on July 14, 2014

After premiering on Pitchfork earlier this week, Rome Fortune went on to gather up a gaggle of critical acclaim on his new release, “Lights Low”. Fortune stayed true to his trippy, dream-like sound gliding atop of the Four Tet production. And, although it is unclear how many more releases there might be before his next project, we can assume that we will be equally as impressed.

Rome Fortune just finished up his New York City debut show this week at the Hudson Project. Fortune is on to something big here, and it won’t be long before his Atlanta roots spread worldwide.

DO SOMETHING

Hip-Hop, Rap | Black Zheep DZ – Mr. Slick

Posted by on June 20, 2014

Today I wanted to present to you the newest young emcee earning his keep in the DMV, Black Zheep DZ. He has performed alongside GoldLink, as well as starred in the “When I Die” music video. However, he is far more than a supporting role.

Just yesterday he dropped the newest single off of his forthcoming mixtape, 8th World. The song is called “Mr. Slick” — a self-proclaimed nickname for the 20 year old. Zheep has already made quite an impression in and around Maryland, so it’s only a matter of time before he finds his voice and is able to expand operations nationally.

In addition to “Mr. Slick”, Black Zheep also recently released a music video for his song, “Yesterdays”. A catchy, yet gritty, song that shows the direction Zheep plans to take his music. Accompanying the song is an incredibly well-done video by the fine people at Goodboy Media.

Albums | Young Money Yawn – Lost Scriptures (Mixtapes)

The DMV has made quite a statement recently with new talent springing up right and left. The influx of new musicians to watch certainly doesn’t stop with Young Money Yawn. The 20 year old emcee takes on a more “street” side of Virginia, and speaks about his come up over a variety of different production styles.

Those who follow the DMV hip-hop scene closely might recognize the Board of Administration’s, Black Cobaine feature, amongst others. The tape is packed with eighteen original songs as well as a few bonus tracks, and aside from the speaking interludes getting a bit repetitive, the project is a very strong body of work. Stream and download in its entirety below!

Hip-Hop, Rap | YalaMusiq – La La La (ft. Beau Young Prince)

Posted by on January 19, 2014

As of late it seems that my music tastes have been heavily shifting towards the melody-heavy sounds of deep house and chillwave music. However, my heart still lies in hip-hop, so when I find a song that is able to combine all the elements that I am growing more fond of with those of rap, I am one happy camper.

Beau Young Prince is a native of Washington, D.C. and although he’s been in the music game for a minute, these next few months should be big ones. We have already begun to see his groovy sounds spread beyond the DMV roots, and with stellar music like this, I see no limits for how much it can grow. Enjoy “La La La” and go check Beau on Twitter to stay updated!

The DMV is next up. We’ve seen cities emerge this past year and show off their stars, but really and truly, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia is blossoming with so much talent that it is becoming impossible to ignore. At the forefront of the movement is the Hostile Youth clan.

Today I bring to you an offering from two of the Hostile Youth members, Ace Cosgrove and Uno Hype. The duo delivers a eerie track with a hint of jazz, perfect for your post-halloween festivities. The song clocks in at only 2 minutes, meaning there will hopefully be plenty more collaboration in the near future.
