Albums | 44 ardent drops new 14-track album, ‘leo’

Posted by on December 15, 2023

44 Ardent is an indie-dance/house project from Australian artist Callan Alexander (aka cln), which has a sound that could be likened to a mix between Caribou, Tourist and Odesza.

When creating the 44 Ardent project back in 2018, Callan had decided to keep his real identity under wraps. The initial intention for project was simply for him to have an outlet to continue releasing the more electronic/dance focused music he was creating while his other main project, cln, began moving into a more alternative indie/pop kinda realm.

Since then, however, 44 Ardent has taken on a life of its own, and Callan is excited to reveal this project to his entire network of friends and fans, giving it the recognition it deserves.

“44 Ardent was initially supposed to be a secret/anonymous side project, but I’m not very good at keeping secrets. Quite a few people have figured out that it’s me/cln, so I’ve now decided to let the cat out of the bag. I created this project as more of an electronic outlet as cln has shifted a little bit more into the indie world. Electronic music has always been my favourite type of music to make, as you have total creative freedom. I was making so many songs that couldn’t really be released under cln, and I needed to find a place to put them. 44 Ardent is that place.” ~ Callan Alexander

Throughout 2023 Callan has given us six exceptional 44 Ardent singles, but there is still so much more to come from him this week as he shares a very generous 14-track album titled “leo”, which as he reveals below is a culmination of various genres & styles of electronic music that he has spent a lot of time exploring this year.

“leo is the culmination of all of the 44 Ardent music that I’ve made over the last year or so. I have noticed that a lot of the best producers have an approach where they focus on pumping out lots of quick ideas, and then refine the best ones. I’ve tried to follow that to an extent, making heaps of music very quickly and then only finishing the ideas that I really like. This album is the end product of that. There is a real mix of genres and styles, as I’ve tried not to corner myself into any particular sound.

I hope to keep releasing lots of music under this alias and am very grateful to my manager Jez for believing in the project and pushing it forward. Thank you for listening xx.” ~ Callan Alexander

Albums | cln releases new LP, ‘Over, All Again’

Posted by on December 16, 2022

Over the last few months Australian artist cln has released a grip of well crafted music — all of which to build hype and anticipation for second album ‘Over, All Again’. The 12-track release is filled with groovy tunes, all of which can be streamed now above. Enjoy!

“This album represents a real sonic shift for me. I don’t think it sounds anything like my previous work, and it is a big mix of sounds and genres. The album is also representative of the changes in my life over the last few years since Dawn Chorus was released.

One of the biggest changes between albums is my shift towards work in acoustic research. I spend a lot of my time trying to solve environmental and ecological problems using sounds and artificial intelligence. I mostly work on birds, and spend a lot of time in remote places deploying recorders. I hear some incredible soundscapes when I am out there, and they heavily inspire my work.

Throughout the album, you will hear scattered recordings of interesting sounds that I come across in my travel. I have some really cool stuff in there: Powerful Owl, Noisy Pitta, Marbled Frogmouth, Albert’s Lyrebird, and a bunch of other rare and interesting species. I have kept them quite subtle, so as not to overpower the songs, but I love that they are nestled in there. I think natural noises are about as beautiful as it gets, and they are my biggest inspirations for making music.

I have tried to make this album cohesive and unique. I have not tried to stick to any templates or genres. I have essentially just made music that I think sounds cool. If it resonates with others too, then that is a huge bonus and I find it a huge privilege that there are people taking time to listen to my work. I hope you enjoy it. Listen to it from start to finish if you can, preferably on a car ride to a beautiful unspoiled place. When you get there though, I encourage you to take out the headphones and enjoy the natural sounds instead.” ~ cln

Wow, this is one of those tracks you stumble across and find yourself playing 20 times in a row. If you’re like me and somehow hadn’t discovered CLN before, it’s time to change that. CLN dropped ‘Left Behind’ to celebrate the announcement of his debut Australian tour (dates here). Fun fact, not only was the track produced by CLN, but that is also his voice on the vocals #talent.

Electronic | Disclosure – White Noise (cln remix)

Posted by on April 10, 2014

We’re approaching the one-year anniversary since the unforgettable release of Settle and yet, Disclosure remixes are still popping up at a steady rate. What this can only mean though is that for a remix to get any attention at all at this point has to really stand out. I think it’s safe to say Australian up and comer cln. hit the mark with this remix of “White Noise.” He brought this track around a full 180, turning it into a more passionate electronic ballad featuring strings and some very distant sort of tropical beats, not to mention somehow managing to transform Aluna Francis’s vocals into something more Amy Winehouse-esque, which works perfectly for this rework.

A quick glance at cln.’s Soundcloud is enough reason to expect big things out of this producer – his feed includes a delicate Drake remix (think Ryan Hemsworth) and a brand new Kilter remix that’s already heating up. Plan to spend your weekend with cln. on repeat.
