Dubstep, Preview | Underworld – Rez (Bassnectar Remix) [Preview]

Posted by on January 16, 2013

Well, happy effing Wednesday. Bassnectar may be off the grid at the moment, but we’ve still got an exciting preview of what to expect from him next month. In the midst of all the blowout shows he treated fans to at the end of 2012, it seems he managed to find time to polish off a monster remix of Underworld’s 1994 tech-trance epic “Rez”. If you’re a fan of Lorin’s explosive, mind-melting soundscapes, heady builds, ferocious low-end bass and unparalleled usage of drums, you’ll be all over his treatment of this track — it’s a slow, spacey journey through many of his trademark sounds. Look for it to drop bass in your face on February 12th.

Drum & Bass, Trance | Spice’s Top 12 of 2012

Less than a week into 2013, here are the songs that continue to have the strongest possible association for me with the crazy year that was 2012. Note: heavy on the trance.

Contests, Events, Indie | AUSTIN CITY LIMITS 2012 RECAP

Posted by on October 17, 2012

Austin City Limit’s promising lineup resulted in a weekend that was, without a question, one for the books. The sold-out festival denied no music lover. From toddlers on their parents’ shoulders to fist pumping grandpas, hippies carrying flags made out of bras to Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling, the experience was as enticing to see as it was to hear. In the time that I wasn’t chowing down on truffle mac and cheese and watermelon topped with warm goat cheese and Pop Rocks (yes, it’s a real thing), or indulging in unicorn Texas T-shirts, I managed to witness some of today’s, but also yesterday’s, most impressive musicians. Every performance left me in a state of awe, thinking it must be true what they say in the South: God blessed Texas.

Events, Indie | Austin City Limits: A Foolproof Guide

Posted by on October 12, 2012

This weekend, Fresh New Tracks will get back in touch with its indie side at the 11th edition of the Austin City Limits Music Festival. ACL primarily focuses on folk and indie music, but this year’s much-talked about lineup features icons from every generation and genre, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Avicii, The Black Keys, BASSNECTAR, Alabama Shakes, and more. The three-day festival, showcasing over 130 bands at eight different stages, will be a significantly more laidback atmosphere in comparison to the earlier 2012 festival season, but after some of the outrageous, mind-blowing shows we’ve seen this year, this might be exactly what we need.

Electronic, Events | Bassnectar and Gramatik @ Austin City Music Hall 10/12

Posted by on October 11, 2012

Bassnectar’s fall tour will be making a quick stop in Austin this weekend for the Austin City Limits Music Festival. After the gates close Friday on the first night of ACL Music Festival, Bassnectar, along with Gramatik and Gladkill, will perform at the Austin Music Hall as a pre-show to his ACL appearance at the Honda Stage the next day.

If you recall Pretty Lights’ surprise two-hour long set from last year’s Late Night series, then you know at intimate performances like these, anything goes. It’s bound to be more wild than anything you’ll experience on Sixth Street.

To prepare us for the show, Bassnectar released a heavy hitting mix a few days ago in preparation for his EP release, which is entitled ‘Freestyle’. Grab the mix below and jam out until the show and pre-order the new EP on iTunes HERE.

Be sure to check out Gramatik and Gladkill’s Soundclouds provided below, to get your fix of some sick gliched out hip-hop melodies to get you in the right mind set for the upcoming weekend.

The show is Friday, October 12th. Doors open at 10 p.m. More info here.

Dubstep, Mixtapes | Bassnectar – Freestyle Mixtape & News On Upcoming EP

Posted by on October 3, 2012

Bassnectar is and always will be the King of Dubstep, no one can seem to follow his style, he is literally an unstoppable force. This new mixtape of his is full of and based off of his unreleased and upcoming EP, “Freestyle,” dropping October 16th. Only days away!!! F^@K, Bassnectar owns this mixtape, he even has some Trap on here, which I hate. Bassnectar shows how Trap is to be done, it’s not Moombahton! For Gods sake, all Trap is, is just bad Moombahton, Trap is part of Purple Bass music, look it up and take notes. He isn’t the King just because he is famous, Bassnectar is the King of Bass because he knows exactly what he is doing and he constantly proves that.

I can’t begin to talk about every single track on here so I will keep it simple until his new EPs release. I will just mentions my favorites because they are clearly the most amazing tracks in this mixtape…in my opinion of course. I will even do the favor of mentioning the time periods to which they reside on this mix. First track on the mix I liked is “Freestyle” (1:46-4:00), it is in fact Dubstep but contains a bit of the Trap I was talking about. Second, “Jigga Up (Bassnectar Remix),” (11:11-15:07), its long, isn’t that great? Who doesn’t love those rasta vibes, hell knows I love them. Third, “Manhattan Bound (Bassnectar Remix),” (15:08-16:43), let me just start by saying I love Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, their style should be used and remixed more, it is something you just don’t see enough these days. Fourth, “Bassnectar & DC Breaks – Breathless feat. Mimi Page,” (23:45-26:18), this may be one to add to Bassnectar’s greatest, DC Breaks have had a hand in greats of his before and this just further proves their incredible chemistry. Last, “Ed Solo – Egyptian Horns (Bassnectar Remix),” (32:49-34:40, not including vocal samples), this remix may never release. Bassnectar is known for his countless unreleased remixes, this remix being one that is one of the most sick to never be obtained by any of us.

Long, though my write up is, this mixtape is well worth the listen. If you dont feel like reading at least consider the time periods I posted about to the mixtape, they should be listened to even if you don’t finish the mix.

Dubstep | Bassnectar – Ugly (feat. Amp Live)

Posted by on March 5, 2012

Your Monday afternoon just got serious. Bassnectar dropped a teaser track from his upcoming album “VAVA VOOM” (out on April 10th) just in time to save us all from the 2:30 p.m. low. “Ugly” is a relentless, head-knocking drumstep rollercoaster with insane, rapid-fire breakbeats undergirding a fresh vocal sample from Amp Live of Zion I (and, of course, plenty of that trademark heavy bass). In short, this track is a monster and you need to download it immediately. Expect to hear it in many sets now that festival season is upon us — I can’t even imagine how crowds will react when this one drops.
