Albums, Hip-Hop, Rap | Atlanta Native, Kelechi, Drops Debut Album “Before The Quarter”

Posted by on May 27, 2016

Sometimes you hear an artist and are 7-seconds into the first song, you’re on to the next. Sometimes you hear an artist for the first time and are instantly drawn in. Whether it be the beat, their flow, the lyrics or the message, sometimes you just get that feeling you found something special. A few years back I stumbled across STNDRD, a hip-hop duo out of Hotlanta. Kelechi & Phay, two very talented artists were the talent behind the label. They were clearly motivated (as I quickly confirmed after seeing and hearing “We Want It All“). They were cultured and proud of their diverse backgrounds. They were confident, fun, and full of energy. Most importantly, they could RAP.

Fast forward 2 1/2 years, both artists are still representing STNDRD, but pursuing parallel solo careers. Kelechi was the recipient of $50k after being recognized as the winner of Green Label Sound’s “Open Call” contest. Identified as one of the next talents on the brink of explosion, Kelechief invested that nickel lump right back into his debut album, Before The Quarter. Making valuable industry connections and cosigns along the way, Kelechi has been earning his key and building bridges along the way. “Before the Quarter” is Kelechi’s breakout. 10 tracks, from raw to delicate, Chief flexes appropriately, but never lacks a message. Enjoy the album stream and cop your own copy on iTunes if those first 7-seconds hit you like they hit me.

Hip-Hop, Rap | If you don’t know, now you do:MAYZIN

If you don’t know who Mayzin is, you need to get educated real quick. He is easily one of my favorite MC’s out there now, a full stack artist, producing, writing, and making smashes. This is definitely an artist to watch out for and is part of the next generation. This is one of my favorite releases so far, Up All Night is a classic; 2016, watch out!

Recently the internet put in front of me an artist that I wish I had known earlier. Kai Straw of San Francisco is the man I am referring to. This dude is coming out with a new album entitled Toothpick on April 12th, but he’s providing singles a bit early to tide fans over. The second single off of the album is “The Business,” which features Bay Area collaborators Keak Da Sneak and Roach Gigz. The record is a fresh breath of air in the hip-hop world, that is largely being ran by the R&B meets trap style. Here, we get a classic rap creation that brings solid verses to the table with a unique beat produced by James The Bear. Expect another couple singles before the album drops, as they are sure to be some top quality tunes.

Alternative, Rap | Listen to Jon Waltz and his incredible release “Justified”

Posted by on March 23, 2016

Jon Waltz is no stranger to us here, and he is easily one of the best artists to rise through the ranks over the past year. He is on a roll, making some of the best music possible on the independent circuit, I don’t think it will be too long before we start to see him in a city near you. I listened to Justified a couple of times, and it only gets better the more you listen to it! Hit the Free Download here: Free Download – Jon Waltz

Pop, Rap | Timeflies impresses on their new single Once In A While

Posted by on February 2, 2016

The duo Timeflies recently released their first single since putting out their album Just For Fun last year. The song, “Once In A While”, is a contemporary pop song that features production by Rez and rapping/singing from counterpart, Cal. The song is tropical and fun, perhaps inspired by a recent move to Los Angeles.

Electro-House, Hip-Hop, House, Rap | Haezer Delivers Underground Crossover Anthem With “You Feel Me”

South Africa has some great artists coming out of its cities, but Haezer is someone who is really holding it down in the electronic scene. His techno/electro crossovers are some of the most solid underground club tracks that dance music has seen in a while. His newest fits more the electro style, but he enlists emcee Born I to turn things up with a hot verse that adds a whole other dimension to the track. For all the industry people who wear “all black everything” this song is made for you. Rap and dance music have been steadily put together more and more over the past year, but Haezer and Born I have just set a high bar for anything coming out in the future. Because of its unique and surprisingly catchy sound, this one is well worth its purchase price.

Boston producer and emcee Darcy dropped us the third track in as many weeks with ‘Just Another‘. Fresh off a recent performance with Witt Lowry, the latest offering is exactly what we have come to expect from Darcy as the self produced track is a solid listen that tells another piece of his story.
